What My Parents Did Right

As we pause in May and June to honor our parents, can I just say...

I'm SO thankful my parents were just a little nuts! (Haha-just kidding, Mom). Rest assured, both my parents would tell you I am responsible for driving THEM crazy!!!

Kidding aside, I am truly thankful for my heritage. Certainly, we were not a perfect family; but there are a lot of things my folks did right. If I had to narrow the list to the top ten:

  • Unconditional love: Literally! Love was not connected to my performance, whether good or bad.

  • Self-esteem: The encouragement to be ME, and to be OK with walking to the beat of a different drum.

  • Acceptance, period: As zany as some of my ideas were at times, NEVER did my parents "poo-poo" my dreams.

  • Discipline: Oh yeah, clearly I did NOT wear the pants in my family.

  • Consistency: They did what they said and said what they meant. "Yes" meant "yes" and "no" meant "no"... MOST of the time.

  • A strong work ethic: "Work hard first, then play hard" was the mantra.

  • Values: I regularly heard the phrases "be good!", "just do the right thing and you will be ok"; "always do good 'bidness with good people"; and "live honestly and you'll never have anything to hide."

  • Faith: I was shown how to have one. Dad always said: "I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day." Not bad advice for one that talks as much as I do!

  • Relationships - Nothing Matters More: Love others as you love yourself and treat others the way you want to be treated. Pretty simple, huh?

  • Live each day to its fullest: Before you put your head on the pillow at night, do an honest appraisal of the day, acknowledging that which you are thankful for and identifying things that you can learn from. Not only do you sleep a lot better each night, you have no regrets.

Regardless, of your history, I challenge you to take a look at your heritage and find something (even if only one thing) that your parents did right. Don't get me wrong--I realize that may require a bit of creative reframing for some of you, but I trust your ability to come up with something!!!

Hugs to you all,
